Bird flu was also found to change brain genes making sufferers more prone to depression, autism and schizophrenia.

The strains damage the hippocampus in the ­centre of the brain by causing inflammation, a study on mice found.

But swine flu does not cause long-term effects on the brain, scientists at Braunschweig University in Germany said.
